This past weekend we celebrated my sister's...21st birthday! (again?)! Yay!
She had originally requested a lemon poppyseed dessert, but then we found out that a family member was allergic to poppyseeds so the morning of her birthday I woke up and had no clue what I was going to make!
Another one of my sister's favourite desserts is strawberry shortcake, so I decided to make a vanilla cake and fill it with vanilla buttercream and strawberries to try and bring some of the flavours together.
I used this vanilla bean cupcake recipe from mybakingaddictio.comn for the cake (it is my favourite vanilla recipe!) and filled it with a basic vanilla buttercream and sliced fresh strawberries.
Alright, now I had a cake ready and dirty-iced, and no clue how to decorate it! At one point over the last year I had stumbled across a video on youtube showing how to make zebra-printed fondant, so I figured why not give it a shot!
I rolled out some white fondant, and then randomly covered it in thin strips of black fondant. Then I quickly smoothed it all out with a large rolling pin, crossed my fingers, and then started smoothing it onto the cake. I was so focused on making it work I didn't even think to take pictures of the process, oops!
It worked! I was so excited and I knew she would love it. I finished it off with some fun decorations, and Voila! A fun cake for my awesome sister.
Happy Birthday Leah!
This cake is stunning. I love the colors. The zebra trick turned out perfect and I love the flower details. sigh. wished I lived closer so I could get a birthday cake from you! :)
