Yesterday I was lucky enough to attend a fundraiser called Bread for Burundi with some of my 'newly' acquired family members. We attended a bread making class at the amazing Treestone Bakery which is owned and run by Yvan Chartrand, and all funds went towards the development of education and the ability for families to become economically self-sufficient in Burundi, Africa. And now I really want to get myself some bread baskets. So convenient!
We learned all about sourdough bread (something I haven't yet worked the courage up to try in my own home), the proper way to knead and shape a loaf, different flours, importance of temperature, and a ton of tips and tricks along the way. While we only made sourdough in class, most of the information will be fantastic to have when I make a yeast-dough as a ton of the methods are the same.
We were able to mix our own dough using the sourdough starter (aka levain) that they had in-house, knead the dough to perfection, and then bake it up and enjoy!
I cannot describe how amazing the bakery smelled as we waited very impatiently for our bread.
When I got home, I could barely wait for supper to cut open my first loaf of bread. Look at those amazing holes! Perfection I tell you.
Now I just need to get my hands on some levain, and before you know it I will be (hopefully) be producing my own sourdough at home!
